Bio-based polyphthalamide plastic suited for SMT connector applications

Bio-based flame retardant polyphthalamide resin is optimized for use in SMT connector applications for electric vehicles.

DuPont Transportation & Advanced Polymers, a newly formed business segment within DowDuPont’s Specialty Products Division offering engineering plastics, elastomers, lubricants and specialty silicon material, has introduced a new polyamide (PA) grade with bio-based content for SMT (surface mount technology) connector applications. DuPont Zytel HTNFR42G30NH is a flame retardant polyphthalamide high-performance PA material that can meet increasingly demanding industry standards and requirements.

The new grade meets evolving trends for SMT connector applications while providing an optimal balance of improved performance and safety, increased productivity, and cost effectiveness. Bridging the cost/performance gap between traditional polyamides/engineering plastics and higher-priced specialty polymers, Zytel HTN high performance polyamide resins are said to be a great viable alternative to metals and thermoset resins in a wide range of applications.

Zytel HTNFR42G30NH is a 30% glass reinforced, flame retardant polyphthalamide (PPA) plastic that boasts ease of processing. Benefits include:

The Critical Power Expo is part of North America’s largest industry event, bringing a comprehensive showcase of critical power technologies, advanced battery, and electric & hybrid manufacturing, and onto one show floor.

    • Improved safety: Thanks to the UL 94 V0 flammability rating at 0.4 mm and superior flow and high CTI (Comparative Tracking Index) of 600V.
    • Increased productivity: Zytel HTNFR42G30NH has better reflow performance and higher weld line strength than existing competitive offerings. Connectors moulded with Zytel HTNFR42G30NH show no blistering at SMT reflow temperatures of 280ᴼC. The improved weld line strength also helps to reduce breakages. The combination of superior flow and better weld line strength provides increased design flexibility for miniaturized components such as multi-pins, fine pitch and low height connectors.
    • Cost effectiveness: Continuous molding trials with Zytel HTNFR42G30NH also show less injection molding machine corrosion when compared to PA 9T and PA 4T based products. The very low mold deposit nature of this new product also reduces tool maintenance.

Both the auto and consumer electronics industries use the SMT process to manufacture connectors. With Asia being a major global production and assembly site for various type of connectors, DuPont expects the highest consumption of Zytel HTNFR42G30NH to emerge in China.

“Offering a good balance of mechanical and electrical properties, low moisture adsorption, excellent moldability, high flow, and low mold corrosion, our novel Zytel HTNFR42G30NH provides advantages over other products, particularly for SMT connector applications. Zytel HTNFR42G30NH complements our ever-growing portfolio for a solution-driven consumer market,” said Carlonda Reilly, Global Technology Director of Nylon Enterprise & Polyester/Filaments, DuPont Transportation & Advanced Polymers.
