The acquisition introduces product and software-based, open-architecture solutions for machines and factory automation into ABB’s portfolio.
Global industry technology manufacturer ABB recently completed the acquisition of Bernecker + Rainer Industrie-Elektronik GmbH (B&R), which was originally announced back on 4 April, 2017.
The addition of B&R adds several technological capabilities to ABB’s arsenal around machine and factory automation, further enhancing the company’s industrial automation portfolio.
Ulrich Spiesshofer, CEO, ABB, said: “Following the acquisition of B&R, we are the only industrial automation provider offering customers in process and discrete industries the entire spectrum of technology and software solutions around measurement, control, actuation, robotics, digitalisation and electrification.
“This combination will open new global growth opportunities by expanding our offerings to existing clients while also bringing ABB’s broad reach, extensive domain knowledge and deep technical expertise to industries and customers that we have not served before.”
As per the agreement, B&R will be absorbed into ABB’s Industrial Automation division, forming a new global business unit that will be headquartered in Eggelsberg, Austria. Known as Machine & Factory Automation, the new division will be overseen by Hans Wimmer, former managing director of B&R.
Commenting on the acquisition, Wimmer, who will now serve as managing director of ABB’s new Machine & Factory Automation business unit, shared: “The B&R team is proud to be part of ABB and its leading industrial automation division.”
He added: “With our compatible cultures, complementary strengths and leading technologies, ABB and B&R will have an even more compelling value proposition to offer our customers in the fourth industrial revolution.”
